The International Association of Insurance Supervisors has appointed Gerry Cross as its next secretary general, effective 15 June 2026, in a media release on Tuesday.
Cross currently serves as director of capital markets and funds at the Central Bank of Ireland, which he joined in 2015, and previously served as the bank’s director of financial regulation policy and risk. Earlier in his career, he held director roles at AFME (Association for Financial Markets in Europe) and at the Institute of International Finance.
He has nearly 30 years’ experience in financial services and regulation, including serving on the IAIS executive committee from 2019 to 2024. He has also been a member of the board of supervisors of the European Banking Authority and the European Securities and Markets Authority, as well as an alternate member of the board of supervisors of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority.
In his new role, Cross will lead the IAIS secretariat and support the executive committee in advancing the organisation’s strategic priorities, which aim to promote effective and globally consistent supervision of the insurance sector.
He will succeed Jonathan Dixon, who has served as IAIS secretary general since 2017. Dixon will remain with the association as special adviser until August 2026 to support the leadership transition.
“Gerry Cross has served as a financial regulator for many years and has held several roles within the broader financial sector during his career. He brings a strong record of leadership, addressing challenging issues and working collaboratively,” Toshiyuki Miyoshi, chair of the IAIS executive committee, said.
The announcement follows another recent appointment by the organisation. In February, the IAIS named the Hong Kong Insurance Authority’s Tony Chan as vice chair of its implementation assessment committee.
