The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has announced the resignation of Carmen Beverley-Smith, executive director for life insurance, private health insurance and superannuation (LPHIS), effective immediately.
In a media release on Monday, APRA said Beverley-Smith has stepped down to take up a senior role at a regulated entity. She has held the executive director position since March 2023, initially overseeing superannuation before her responsibilities expanded to include life and private health insurance in September 2024.
Peter Kohlhagen, LPHIS general manager, will serve as acting executive director on an interim basis while APRA scouts for someone to permanently fill the role. The regulator said it would seek to appoint a replacement as soon as possible.
Beverley-Smith joined APRA from Westpac, where she served as general manager of risk transformation delivery integration.
Her appointment formed part of a broader organisational restructuring aimed at strengthening APRA’s technology, data, and stakeholder engagement capabilities, which also included the creation of new executive director roles and the appointment of a chief of staff.
Before joining APRA, Beverley-Smith spent more than 20 years in financial services, holding senior leadership roles at Westpac and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Her experience spans risk management, transformation and change, technology optimisation, product and portfolio development, and sales and service.
