Christian Stobbs will move to the US to become Markel’s Chief Strategy and Corporate Development Officer, the specialty (re)insurer announced on Tuesday, 15 July.
Stobbs first joined the Lloyd’s player in 2015 and has held the position of Managing Director for Asia Pacific since 2019, operating out of Singapore.
Under Stobbs’ leadership as APAC MD, the region’s gross written premium grew by about 600%, staff numbers in the region have almost tripled, and underwriting profit has also risen, said Markel.
Stobbs will initially relocate to the US, where he reports directly to insurance Chief Executive, Simon Wilson. In his new capacity, he is tasked with identifying and advancing strategic growth opportunities across the business’s operations.
“I’m confident that Christian’s proven leadership successes and his more than 17 years of insurance and financial services industry experience will unlock even greater opportunities to help Markel Insurance to win,” said Wilson.
The business last month announced Stobbs’s successor, with Sucheng Chang moving from Aon to take up the role of Managing Director for Asia Pacific, effective as of last Monday (14 July).
The move is the latest in a series of key strategic hires in the region by the specialty player, including the appointment of Jasminder Kaur as Country Head for Malaysia, announced earlier this month, and the hire of Collin Sim as the business’s first dedicated Casualty Underwriter in June.
