Hong Kong’s Insurance Authority (IA) said on Thursday, 27 Nov, that it had set up a task force to work closely with the insurance industry and provide support to those affected by the fire at Wang Fuk Court in the city’s Tai Po district.
The blaze, which began on Wednesday afternoon, has led to the deaths of at least 55 people, with another 62 injured and 279 still missing.
In a letter issued on Thursday, the IA expressed its condolences to the victims of the Tai Po Hong Fuk Court, with the regulator adding it is “fully coordinating with the insurance industry to provide support and assistance to those affected.”
The IA task force, led by senior management, will help oversee the work of relevant insurance companies and ensure the industry allocates sufficient resources to handle enquiries and claims, the regulator said.
Insurers have responded to the fire by introducing several measures for affected policyholders. These include setting up dedicated hotlines for enquiries, streamlining and prioritising claims, offering extra support beyond policy terms, granting premium pauses or extending payment grace periods, and waiving death certificate requirements where possible.
“As a stabiliser for society, insurance must provide emergency support during serious incidents,” said Yiu Kin-wah, Chairman of the IA.
“I am pleased to note that insurance companies have taken immediate action following the fire, including setting up dedicated hotlines, streamlining and expediting claims processes, and providing additional support beyond policy coverage to help those affected navigate this difficult time,” Kin-wah added.
The regulator said it also remains in close contact with the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI).
In a separate statement from the HKFI, Selina Lau, Chief Executive, said, “We are devastated by the tragic fire, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families. Our member companies are fully equipped to assist victims in their time of need, providing resources and support to help them through this difficult journey towards recovery.”
