Hong Kong IA to form dedicated working group on specialty insurance

The launch of Hong Kong’s gold central clearing and settlement system is expected to create opportunities in specie insurance, with the IA already engaging brokers on the trend.

Hong Kong’s Insurance Authority (IA) will establish a dedicated working group on specialty insurance as the regulator seeks to develop new growth areas under the city’s five-year insurance development plan, IA chairman Stephen Yiu said at the Confederation of Insurance Brokers (CIB) annual conference.

Speaking at the event, Yiu underscored that specialty insurance is a key component of Hong Kong’s five-year plan. He also called on the CIB members to share views on the working group’s targets and priorities.

In September, the Hong Kong government outlined an expanded role for the insurance sector under the city’s first five-year plan, with initiatives spanning captive insurance, insurance-linked securities (ILS), specialty underwriting, marine risk pooling, climate risk management and commercial aerospace insurance.

The IA chairman said the launch of Hong Kong’s gold central clearing and settlement system is expected to drive demand for specie insurance covering the storage, refining and transportation of precious metals.

The region’s exposure to typhoons, floods and droughts, coupled with just 14% of disaster losses being insured, gives both applications potential relevance. However, regulatory barriers, disputed settlements and concerns over data integrity still stand between insurers and wider use of prediction markets.
IRDAI’s proposed commission caps draw sharp pushback from brokersThe Insurance Brokers Association of India, representing 798 licensed brokers, opposed IRDAI’s proposal to restore line-by-line commission caps. Intermediaries warned that the proposed caps could hurt policyholders and shrink distribution reach, while the association said both brokers and insurers could lose jobs. IRDAI’s chairman has defended the changes, saying the proposed reforms aim to improve affordability and narrow the information gap between insurance sellers and buyers.
China bats for wider domestic trade credit insurance coverageChina’s NFRA and the Ministry of Commerce called for wider domestic trade credit insurance coverage, encouraging co-insurance for large emerging-industry exposures and greater reinsurance support. A nine-task notice seeks to support domestic demand while pairing wider cover with stronger underwriting, shared credit data and industry-wide exposure monitoring. Local commerce authorities have also been encouraged to share business lists with insurers, with leading companies used to promote domestic trade credit coverage across supply chains.
Gallagher acquires New Zealand broker Albany InsuranceArthur J. Gallagher & Co. has acquired Albany Insurance Services, its second Pacific retail broking deal this year. The New Zealand broker serves commercial and personal lines clients in Auckland and Canterbury, extending Gallagher’s retail footprint in the country. Albany’s team will join Gallagher’s New Zealand operations, reporting to the head of its local retail business.
South Korea FSS targets insurance broadcast ads over elevated mis-sellingSouth Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service called for stronger controls on insurance broadcast advertising after policies sold through the channel recorded three times the mis-selling rate of other channels in 2025. The FSS said industry self-regulation had failed to stop repeated provocative or exaggerated advertising by insurers and home-shopping general agencies. Insurance associations say they will refine advertising review standards and develop disclosure criteria following industry consultation, potentially covering insurers’ broadcast frequency and airtime.
