Markel Insurance has promoted Colin Wildey to chief risk officer (CRO) for Markel International, subject to regulatory approval, the specialty insurance announced on Tuesday.
Wildey has served as head of risk for Markel International since 2022 and brings more than a decade of senior risk management experience across the London Market and the international insurance sector.
In his new role, he will focus on strengthening how risk considerations inform decision-making across Markel International, aligned with the group’s strategy. He will report to Henry Gardener, CRO of Markel Insurance
“The Risk team at Markel International plays a critical role in strengthening resilience throughout the business,” Gardener said, adding that Wildey “combines strong technical expertise with a collaborative, pragmatic approach”.
Before joining Markel, Wildey was UK chief risk officer and group head of risk and capital at Fidelis Insurance. Earlier in his career, he held risk management, consulting, and underwriting roles across organisations writing business in the UK, Ireland, Bermuda, Australia and New Zealand, and has worked with regulators including the PRA, FCA, BMA and CBI.
His promotion adds to a run of international appointments at Markel this month, including Phil Amlot to lead international trade credit and John Bang as head of Korea and Japan, alongside moves to bolster professional and financial risks capabilities, such as Mark Christen in Australia and the hiring of Johnny Zhang as senior underwriter and Jon Tam as underwriter for the PFR and cyber team in Greater China.
