Sompo Japan Insurance has named Heiko Thienenkamp as Chief Operating Officer, Commercial Business, and Hiroki Ohashi as Head of Financial Lines, effective 1 September, as part of the company’s Commercial Insurance business expansion, according to a press release on 11 September.

Thienenkamp moves to Sompo after spending 17 years with AIG’s Japan business, most recently as its Interim Deputy Head of Operations. He has over 25 years of experience in international consulting and insurance, having also worked for The Moneo Company K.K. and Accenture.

In his new role, Thienenkamp will report to Katsuyuki Tajiri, COO of Sompo Japan, and Kenneth Reilly, CEO, Insurance, Asia Pacific and Deputy President, Commercial Business.

Ohashi meanwhile joins from Chubb, where he worked for over six years. There, he most recently held the position of Dept. Manager & Chief Underwriter, Financial Lines Japan. He has nearly two decades of experience in the industry, with expertise in financial lines underwriting. Apart from Chubb, he has also held positions at AIG.

Ohashi will report to Kenta Tezen, Chief Underwriting Officer of Sompo Japan.

The appointments come as Sompo Japan continues its business transformation under the Sompo Property and Casualty (re)insurance platform, formed in February alongside Sompo Wellbeing. The insurer stated that the Commercial Insurance business will work more closely with its overseas operations to leverage global capabilities, enhance profitability, and expand underwriting and operational capacity.

Earlier in September, the company’s APAC operations announced three key finance appointments, headlined by See Ju Chua as Head of Capital Management.
