The Actuarial Society of Hong Kong (ASHK) has awarded HK$10,000 (US$1,276) each to five university students and named five more to its President’s List in the first round of its new scholarship programme, the society announced on Friday.
ASHK presented the awards at its Ageing Well Hong Kong 2026 Conference last week. The 10 recipients study at 6 universities, including 4 at the University of Hong Kong.
The programme is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students at any Hong Kong university who show strong academic results in actuarial science, statistics, risk modelling or related subjects. Recipients can put the funds towards tuition fees, learning materials and other study costs, and each of the five scholarship holders will also have a mentor for one year, according to ASHK’s scholarship page.
ASHK said the scheme supports talent-development goals in Hong Kong’s First Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development (2026–2030), and aims to build a talent pipeline for the city’s actuarial, insurance and risk-management sectors.
“Our inaugural scholarship supports talented students from all universities by easing the financial pressure of actuarial coursework and professional exams,” said Mark Saunders, president of ASHK.
Saunders added that the scheme would help build a talent base to address population ageing, healthcare financing and risk management, and support the society’s aim to attract international actuarial talent to Hong Kong.
Steve Hui, ASHK’s immediate past president, said the scholarship reflects the society’s commitment to nurturing actuarial talent for Hong Kong’s insurance and risk sectors.
ASHK will carry out a full review of the programme by 2027. Subject to the results, it plans to open applications for a second intake and may expand the scheme to more students.
The programme sits alongside ASHK’s existing certificate scholarship, which covers exam fees for nominated actuarial students. Since 2024, the Insurance Authority (IA) has required applicants for appointed actuary roles in long-term business and certifying actuary roles in general business to be ASHK fellows who can show local market knowledge, according to ASHK’s 2025 president’s report.
New fellows must pass the ASHK Certificate in Hong Kong Insurance Markets and Regulations, and 89 candidates sat 168 certificate papers in 2025, up from 13 candidates in 2019.
