The Government of India has appointed Girija Subramanian as whole-time member (distribution) at the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), the regulator said in a release on Monday.
Subramanian brings more than 37 years of experience across the insurance and reinsurance sectors.
She most recently served as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of The New India Assurance Company, having been appointed to the position by the Ministry of Finance in June 2024. Prior to that, she was Chairman and Managing Director of Agriculture Insurance Company of India, a position she took up in September 2022.
Subramanian began her career as a direct recruit officer at GIC Re in 1988 and spent 34 years with the reinsurer, handling various functions and developing expertise in reinsurance.
She is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India and an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London. Subramanian also serves on the boards of several institutions, including the National Insurance Academy, Pune; India International Insurance, Singapore; Prestige Assurance Company, Nigeria; the Institute of Insurance and Risk Management, Hyderabad; GIC Housing Finance; and Health Insurance TPA.
Subramanian is associated with the Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry and serves as co-chair of the Insurance Section of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.
Her appointment follows that of Dinesh Pant, Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India, who joined IRDAI as whole-time Member (Actuary) in June.
