Santam has appointed Hemant Gulati as country head and principal officer of its India-based operation at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), subject to regulatory approval, the company announced on Thursday.

Gulati joins after working for over 17 years at Unison Insurance Broking Services, most recently serving as senior executive vice president and business head for reinsurance at its GIFT City operations. He also worked as an insurance surveyor at Puri Crawford Surveyors & Loss Assessors India earlier in his career.

The appointment follows Santam Group securing regulatory approval in February to establish a reinsurance branch office in India’s GIFT City. The office allows Santam to rapidly build on its existing foothold in the Indian market, drive international expansion, and broaden its treaty and facultative reinsurance footprint, according to the South Africa-based insurer.
