Zurich Takaful Malaysia Berhad and Islamic Aid Malaysia have completed a project to improve access to clean water for more than 2,000 residents of Kampung Chuchoh Puteri in Kelantan, Malaysia, the insurer said on Monday.
The project, funded through Zurich Takaful’s Corporate Zakat Responsibility programme, involved upgrades to the village’s water supply system, which had struggled to meet growing demand.
For more than three decades, residents had relied on a gravity-fed system drawing water from a nearby stream for daily household needs, as well as farming and livestock activities. The system became increasingly inadequate as the village population and number of homes grew. Low water pressure, a limited catchment area and deteriorating pipes further contributed to supply troubles.
Under the Clean Water for the Community programme, the water intake structure was upgraded, damaged pipes were replaced and two 3,000-gallon high-density polyethylene storage tanks were installed. The project also included a membrane-based filtration system, upgrades to nearly 5 kilometers of piping and construction of a pump house to distribute treated water.
The improved system serves households as well as the village mosque, childcare centre, community centre and several madrasahs. It is also intended to provide a more reliable water supply for agricultural activities.
Wan Mohd Fadzmi Che Wan Othman Fadzilah, chairman of Zurich Takaful Malaysia Berhad, said, “We hope this facility will help ease the challenges the community has faced and strengthen the well-being of the residents here. We deeply appreciate the cooperation of Islamic Aid Malaysia and the local residents, who together made this project a success.”
