Canada Life Re opens Singapore regional office, names Wil Chong CEO of Asia Pacific

The capital relief specialist formalises its Asia Pacific presence with a standing local entity.

Canada Life Reinsurance has opened a regional office in Singapore , through a new entity, Canada Life Services, and appointed Wil Chong as chief executive for Asia Pacific.

Chong joined the reinsurer in 2022 as executive advisor for APAC and brings more than 30 years of experience across the US, Europe and Asia Pacific.

He moved to Canada Life Reinsurance from Pacific Life Re, where he was general manager, Asia markets, from 2020 to 2022, overseeing the heads of Greater China, Japan, Korea, South-East Asia and asset-intensive reinsurance and capital management. He spent nearly a decade with Allianz Reinsurance, including as global chief actuary, life and health, and global head of life and health. Before that, he served as general manager and head of life and health, China, at Swiss Re. He is a Fellow of the Singapore Actuarial Society.

“Asia Pacific is a dynamic and fast-growing region for our business,” Chong said. “Establishing our Singapore office reinforces our long-term commitment to the region and strengthens our ability to support our business, clients and partners across Asia Pacific.”

Canada Life Re writes reinsurance business in Asia, Europe and North America, specialising in bespoke capital relief structures covering longevity, mortality and lapse risk. It has done deals in North Asian, South-East Asian and Australian markets. The unit is part of The Canada Life Assurance Company, rated AA by S&P and a subsidiary of Great-West Lifeco.
