Tonga received an insurance payout from the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) on Monday after early action triggers were activated under the country’s parametric insurance policy.
The Short-term Preparedness (SP) payout of US$8,400 was issued to ‘Eua island for the period 1–31 July 2026. The payout amount represents 20% of the ‘Eua limit of US$42,000, the PCRIC said.
A rapid response payout has also been triggered for Tongatapu for the same period, reflecting 41% of the Tongatapu limit of US$86,100.
The payment is made under Tonga’s parametric cover, with premiums funded through the Global Shield Solutions Platform (GSSP).
Earlier this month, the PCRIC announced a US$33,978 insurance payout to support drought preparedness measures in the islands of Ha’apai and Tongatapu.
A similar payout was made last month after prolonged rainfall shortages in May affected communities in Tonga’s Niua island group.
PCRIC provides participating Pacific governments with parametric insurance products that use pre-agreed triggers to release funds rapidly following eligible disaster events.
In April, the insurer approved an ex-gratia payment of FJ$1.2m (US$546,240) to Fiji to support recovery from Category 4 Tropical Cyclone Vaianu.
