Labuan Reinsurance (L) has appointed Chan Swee Chee as its chief underwriting officer, effective 14 September 2026, the Malaysian reinsurer announced on Monday.

Chee brings nearly three decades of experience in the insurance and reinsurance industry, spanning treaty and facultative reinsurance across Asia, including the Middle East.

Throughout his career, Chee has held senior leadership positions across the reinsurance, direct insurance and broking sectors. His previous roles include serving as principal officer and general manager at Royal & Sun Alliance Re (Singapore), chief underwriting officer at Samsung Re (Singapore) and at Asia Capital Re-Takaful (Bahrain).

Chee, who began his career as a civil engineer, is also a present member of the Professional Engineers Board (Singapore) and an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK).

“We look forward to Chan’s leadership, expertise and contribution as we continue to strengthen our underwriting capabilities and deliver sustainable growth,” Labuan Re said in a LinkedIn post.

The appointment follows parent company MNRB Holdings Berhad’s agreement to buy the remaining 80% of Labuan Re for US$100.7m, taking the Malaysian group to full ownership of the reinsurer. Malaysian Reinsurance Berhad, an MNRB unit, already holds the other 20%.

The Malaysian group has secured approvals from Bank Negara Malaysia and the Labuan Financial Services Authority to acquire the stake from a group of Malaysian financial institutions and government-linked entities.

Following the announcement, AM Best placed Labuan Re’s A- Financial Strength Rating and “a-” Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating under review.
