Swiss Re has announced the appointment of Amitabha Ray as the new CEO of its India branch, effective 1 April 2024, pending regulatory approval.

In a company statement, the global reinsurer said Ray will be based in Mumbai, where he will oversee the company’s property and casualty (P&C) business operations for the country. He will report to Victor Kuk, Swiss Re’s Head of P&C Reinsurance SID.

Ray succeeds Hadi Riachi, who has been at the helm of the India team since 2020 and will now transition to Head, Global Underwriting Centre for Swiss Re Corporate Solutions.

Ray has served with Swiss Re for over 27 years across various roles globally, in Zurich, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mumbai, and Johannesburg, with his expertise spanning treaty underwriting, client management, facultative, and business development.

He is promoted from the role of Head of P&C Client Markets, a position he has occupied since 2018, where he led the local team of client managers in India, concentrating on the expansion of the non-life reinsurance business.

Kuk commented on Ray’s appointment: “We are glad to have found a highly qualified individual to succeed Hadi in leading our India team. With Amit’s expertise and knowledge, we are confident that Swiss Re is well-positioned to strengthen our growth in India.”

Kuk also praised Riachi’s contributions, saying, “A valued member of the leadership team in India, he has contributed immensely to building strong client relationships and enhancing our growth in the market. We wish him success in his new role.”
