HDI Global has appointed Christian Wegener as its new Head of Investment Management, the industrial insurer announced on Thursday, 26 June.

In his new role, Wegener will manage the company’s global foreign currency hedging operations, oversee collateral management, and direct the asset allocation process, while ensuring risk-adjusted returns.

Prior to his appointment, Wegener spent more than 8 years in HSBC as Chief Investment Officer in China and Global Head of Investment Solutions for Group Insurance in London and was responsible for investment activities across Latin America, Europe, and India.

From 2011 to 2016, he held senior positions at AXA, including as Regional Manager for Financial Risk Management in Asia, based in Hong Kong.

HDI Global SE Chief Financial Officer Stefan Pasternak lauded Wegener’s track record in the investment field. “I am confident that his international experience and investment expertise will be a valuable addition to our investment community and our own performance,” Pasternak said.

Wegener succeeds Thorsten Wölbern, who served as the company’s Chief Investment Officer for 15 years. Wölbern will remain in HDI to take over its PVI Insurance and the U.K. Pension Trust.

Paternak further commented on Wölbern’s contributions, saying: “During his 15 years as Head of Investment Management at HDI Global, he contributed significantly to the success of HDI Global and the strengthening of our resilience through a targeted, return- and risk-oriented investment strategy as well as the strategic and cross-currency expansion of the asset volume.”

As HDI continues to expand its strategic presence in the Asia Pacific, the firm has made recent key appointments over the past 2 months: Haris Michaels as the region’s Engineering Underwriting Manager and Stevan Bonic as Underwriter Manager, Engineering for Australasia. Taehan Kim also relocated to Hong Kong for his role as Underwriting Manager for Liability in North Asia.
