Munich Re has appointed Kevin Rethual as chief executive officer of Munich Re Retakaful, effective 1 June 2026, the company announced on Tuesday.
Rethual will succeed Serena Thio, who will transition into a senior advisory role before retiring at the end of 2026. He will report to Owais Ansari, Munich Re’s head of regional market reinsurance, MEA.
Based in Kuala Lumpur, Rethual has been with Munich Re Retakaful for more than four years, most recently serving as chief commercial officer. He joined the business in 2021 as head of pricing.
He has nearly 16 years of industry experience, including more than a decade with Sun Life Malaysia, where he held several senior leadership roles before joining Munich Re Retakaful.
Commenting on the announcement, Ansari said Rethual “has demonstrated strong leadership across pricing, commercial strategy, and client engagement, while maintaining a rigorous technical and risk mindset. Under his leadership, Munich Re Retakaful will continue to build on its strong foundations and position itself for the next phase of growth.”
The appointment follows a broader run of senior hires across Munich Re’s Asia-Pacific operations, including Munich Re Automation Solutions naming Damion Howlett as vice president of customer success, APAC, in late March. In mid-February, the group appointed Michaela Hannemann as head of non-life for Australasia.
