Ray Lei was appointed as product proposition lead for Greater China, the specialty insurer announced on Monday.

Lei joins Markel after spending more than 13 years at AXA General Insurance Hong Kong, most recently serving as head of reinsurance hub management for general insurance. She also worked at HDI-Gerling Industrie Versicherung (now HDI Global SE) earlier in her career.

With experience across the insurance market, she will “work closely with teams across the region to strengthen our product proposition, support our brokers and clients, and help drive the next phase of growth in Greater China”, Markel said on LinkedIn.

The appointment comes as Markel pursues broader growth ambitions in Asia Pacific. Last month, the specialty insurer’s head of Asia Pacific, Sucheng Chang, affirmed its aim to nearly double its regional book over the next five years while outlining the company’s growth plans for the region.

As part of these efforts, the insurer has made several moves across the region, including relocating Rob Jones from London to Singapore as sustainable energy and power underwriter, appointing Kevin Leung as managing director for Southeast Asia, and appointing Abbas Choker as chief financial officer for Asia Pacific.
