Markel has named Tim Wills as Head of Marine for its Australian unit, the business announced on Monday, 11 August.

The move represents the specialty insurer’s first expansion in Australia since it introduced long-tail lines alongside an on-the-ground presence two years ago.

In his new role, Sydney-based Wills is tasked with leading Markel’s marine product launch, starting with marine cargo, in the region. He joins from Tokio Marine Kiln, where he served as Head of Marine in Asia Pacific. His previous experiences include roles at Chubb Insurance and QBE.

Commenting on the appointment, Rory Morison, Markel’s Managing Director for Australia, recognised Wills’ expertise as a valuable addition to their team. “This diversification into Marine is a continuation of our plan to put local, empowered specialty underwriters on the ground in Australia, serving the unique needs of our customers in each jurisdiction.”

The appointment follows key regional appointments for Markel, including Sucheng Chang as APAC Managing Director and Collin Sim as the first dedicated Casualty Underwriter. On 3 July, Joanna Quigan also relocated to Australia to become Markel’s Senior Underwriter, Professional and Financial Risks.
