Markel strengthens Indian market presence with appointment of Priyanka Gautama as CUO

Gautama is tasked with strengthening Markel's offering in the country, including the development of a new casualty portfolio.

Markel today announced the appointment of Priyanka Gautama as Chief Underwriting Officer for India, pending regulatory approval.

Gautama, who will be based in the Mumbai office, will report to Deepika Mathur, Managing Director of Markel, India.

She brings 20 years of Indian insurance experience to her new position and joins Markel from HDFC ERGO, where she held the position of Senior Vice President of Liability Underwriting and Claims. Her background also included 11 years with TATA AIG General Insurance.

In her new position, Gautama will work with leadership teams across the country to strengthen Markel India’s product offerings and develop bespoke insurance solutions for clients in India.

The specialty (re)insurer announced that a key part of her responsibilities will be the development a new casualty portfolio in the country. She will also oversee core underwriting strategies and make decisions that improve profitability across the company’s portfolios, Markel said.
