Sompo Japan Insurance has signed a contract with satellite operator ICEYE to use its Flood Insights product in responding to flood events, the companies said in a joint media release on Monday.
The insurer will draw on data from ICEYE’s synthetic aperture radar constellation, which images flooded areas in any weather, day or night.
Sompo Japan added the adoption forms part of its Hikeshi DNA 2030 project, one pillar of which is strengthening its ability to respond before, during and after natural disasters.
“By providing rapid and accurate intelligence on the extent and severity of flood events, ICEYE can help enable a faster and more efficient claims response in the aftermath of a major flood event,” said Yasuhiro ‘Pete’ Tsukahara, chief executive of ICEYE Japan.
ICEYE, founded in Finland and employing more than 1,000 people, also serves customers in defence and intelligence, environmental monitoring, insurance and emergency management.
The contract comes as Japan enters the second half of a typhoon season Munich Re has warned could turn, after unusually low APAC insured losses in the first half of 2026.
Sompo reported a 20% rise in adjusted consolidated profit to ¥119.7bn (US$752m) in Q1 FY2026, helped by underwriting gains across motor, fire and casualty.
