Relm Insurance has appointed Timothy Powell as head of Asia Pacific and global head of underwriting performance, the emerging industries-focused insurer announced on Friday.

The appointment gives Relm its first dedicated leadership presence in Asia Pacific as it prepares to expand across the region, bringing capacity to dynamic and emerging sectors including digital assets, Web3, space, fintech, artificial intelligence and alternative therapeutics.

Returning to Sydney from London, Powell joins the specialty insurer after over three years at Everest Insurance, where he most recently served as international head of financial lines.

He brings more than 35 years of insurance experience, primarily across financial lines, cyber and commercial insurance. Powell previously held senior underwriting and management roles at Zurich, AXA XL, XL Catlin, Allianz Australia and AIG. He started his insurance career with Lipman Group, followed by Sedgwick.

In his new role, Powell will lead the expansion of Relm’s operations across Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. New Zealand, Southeast Asia and mainland China have also been identified as potential future markets.

He will also work with chief underwriting officer Shane Doyle on underwriting guidelines, pricing frameworks, portfolio reviews, exposure management and performance monitoring across the specialty insurer’s global business.

Commenting on the appointment, Doyle said Powell brings “deep underwriting expertise, strong relationships across the market, and a practical understanding of what it takes to build a business.”

“As we establish our presence in Asia Pacific, he’s the right person to lead that next phase of growth,” Doyle added.
