Bupa has appointed Angelo Loizou as chief financial officer for Asia Pacific and Josh Byers as managing director of Bupa New Zealand, with both appointments taking effect on 1 January 2027, the health insurer said on Wednesday.
Loizou, who has spent 10 years with the health insurer across its Australia and Hong Kong operations, currently serves as finance director in Hong Kong. In that role, he has played a leading role in transforming Bupa Hong Kong’s customer and financial performance and building a more sustainable platform for growth, the insurer said.
As APAC CFO, Loizou will join the region’s executive leadership team and relocate to Melbourne with his family. Bupa expects to announce his successor as finance director in Hong Kong in the coming weeks.
In New Zealand, Byers will succeed Pedro Sánchez, who is retiring at the end of 2026 after 20 years with Bupa.
Sánchez joined Sanitas Mayores, Bupa’s aged care business in Spain, as operations director in 2006 and became its general manager in 2021. He has led Bupa New Zealand for the past three years, overseeing changes to its performance, market position and organisational culture, the insurer said.
Incoming MD Byers joined Bupa New Zealand in 2020 as head of customer and brand and became director customer and transformation in 2023. He previously held brand management and senior marketing positions at Fujifilm CSG, Suzuki New Zealand and Konica Minolta NZ.
Since joining Bupa, Byers has led initiatives to embed innovation and technological capabilities across its aged care business, including the launch of Blua, the company’s digital health platform.
Nick Stone, CEO of Bupa Asia Pacific, said the appointments followed extensive recruitment processes and reflected the insurer’s focus on leadership building and succession planning.
Stone also thanked Damien Johnston, who served as interim APAC CFO, for his contribution ahead of his departure on 18 November.
“Their appointments provide continuity while bringing the experience and perspective we need for Bupa’s next phase of growth,” Stone said of Byers and Loizou.
He also acknowledged Sánchez’s contribution to the business over two decades, saying his tenure had left a significant legacy.
