Zurich Insurance on Wednesday named Digbijoy Joseph Shukla as head of digital, Asia-Pacific, succeeding Roopa Malhotra, who is moving to Zurich’s Japan business in a senior executive role.

Malhotra launched and scaled Zurich Edge, the company’s regional digital and embedded insurance business, from 2022. She has now moved to Zurich Japan as chief growth and propositions officer, where she will lead growth, innovation, and cross-sales across property and casualty and life insurance, also joining the country’s executive committee.

Shukla now takes on overall responsibility for Zurich Edge, leading the business’s digital and customer agenda in Asia-Pacific, focusing on digital growth, ecosystem partnerships with platform and technology partners, and the integration of insurance into customer journeys, the business said.

He brings more than 20 years of experience in entrepreneurship, technology, and digital ecosystems across Asia. He most recently served as CEO of two Carsome Group subsidiaries, iCar Asia and WapCar AutoFun, while leading M&A and ecosystem strategy for the Southeast Asian used car e-commerce platform. Before that, he spent nearly seven years at Amazon Web Services, leading business development for the startup ecosystem across India and ASEAN.

Commenting on the appointment, Matt Reilly, chief operating officer, Asia-Pacific, said Shukla brings a unique combination of entrepreneurial drive, deep ecosystem expertise, and proven leadership at scale.

“This breadth of experience makes him the ideal leader to drive the next phase of our customer and digital strategy,” Reilly added.

Zurich Edge now operates across the insurer’s Asia-Pacific markets, collaborating with more than 100 partners, including Cathay Pacific, Trip.com, Traveloka, and GXS Bank. The platform uses embedded insurance and artificial intelligence to integrate insurance into partner platforms and customer journeys.
