Niva Bupa Health Insurance has appointed former Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) whole-time member Ashwani Bhatia as chairman of its board, following the resignation of Milind Barve.

The insurer disclosed that Barve stepped down as chairman and non-executive independent director due to health reasons.

Bhatia had joined Niva Bupa’s board as an independent director in April this year. He brings more than four decades of experience across banking, capital markets and financial regulation. Most recently, he served as a whole-time member of SEBI between 2022 and 2025, overseeing areas including corporate finance, debt and hybrid securities, and market regulation.

Prior to joining the market regulator, Bhatia spent 37 years with the State Bank of India group, where he held several senior leadership positions, including managing director for corporate banking and global markets at SBI and managing director and chief executive officer of SBI Funds Management.
