Markel has named Sucheng Chang as its new Managing Director for Asia Pacific, effective 14 July 2025, the businesses announced on Monday.

He succeeds Christian Stobbs, who will be leaving the APAC region but will continue with Markel in a different capacity.

Chang joins the specialty insurer from Aon, where he spent two years as Chief Executive Officer for Hong Kong. He will relocate to Singapore to assume his new role. There, he will lead Markel International’s Asia Pacific business, which operates from its Singapore regional hub and across its offices in Australia, Hong Kong, China, India, Malaysia, and Dubai.

“Sucheng is a highly strategic and well-respected leader within the Asia Pacific market, and I’m thrilled that he’s joining Markel to lead our regional business in the next phase of its development,” commented Andrew McMellin, President of Markel International.

The business has seen significant growth since the introduction of its ‘Accelerate Asia Pacific’ strategy. Since 2019, gross written premiums have increased approximately 600%, underwriting profitability has strengthened, and the regional workforce has grown by nearly 300%, according to the speciality insurer.

McMellin said that the Accelerate Asia Pacific strategy is a cornerstone of Markel International’s profitable growth, adding, “I’ve no doubt that Sucheng’s leadership qualities and his significant experience of scaling insurance operations in Asia will help us to build on this momentum as we push it forward to even greater success.”

Speaking on his appointment, Chang pointed to the “huge inroads” Markel has been making in Asia Pacific. “I therefore couldn’t be more excited to lead the next phase of the expansion of Markel’s Asia Pacific business, building on the progress that’s been made to expand our presence even further and take advantage of the opportunities available in the US$300bn GWP Asia-Pacific insurance market,” Chang added.

Prior to his time at Aon, Chang spent more than 13 years at Liberty Mutual in strategic roles, including as Chief Distribution Officer for Global Retail Markets East and Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Insurance Singapore.

Chang’s appointment follows a series of key hires within the Markel Group this year, including the promotion of Simon Wilson to Chief Executive Officer of Markel Insurance, Galvin Hu as Marine Hull and War Lead, and Alicia Leong as Head of Marine Liabilities in Singapore.
