Markel has named Jasminder Kaur as Country Head for Malaysia, effective 2 July, as part of its plan to expand its operations in the country.

Kaur brings nearly 3 decades of industry experience to the specialty (re)insurer and joins from Honan Insurance. In her new role, she is tasked with scaling Markel’s presence in the country and will report to Kevin Leung, Chief Underwriting Officer for Asia Pacific, while working closely with the underwriting team in Singapore.

Commenting on the appointment, Asia Pacific Managing Director Christian Stobbs said: “Jasminder’s appointment is a key strategic move for our business in Malaysia,” adding that the business will leverage “her proven ability to deliver results and her deep understanding of the local market.”

Prior to Honan Insurance, Kaur spent 8 years at Aon. Her background also includes roles at United Oriental Insurance (now Tune Insurance), AIG, and Marsh.

The move follows a number of key appointments by the Lloyd’s player in Asia Pacific. Sucheng Chang was recently announced as Managing Director for APAC, effective 14 July. Chang will succeed Stobbs, who will remain with the company in a different capacity. Markel last week also announced the appointment of Collin Sim, its first dedicated Casualty underwriter in Singapore.
