Markel Insurance has tapped Chelsea Jiang to be its new Managing Director (MD) for Greater China, the specialty (re)insurer announced on Wednesday, 16 July.

Hong Kong-based Jiang moves from AXA, where she was the Chief Technical and Innovation Officer for Greater China. In her new role she reports to Sucheng Chang, who officially succeeded Christian Stobbs as Markel’s APAC Managing Director this week.

In her new role, Jiang is responsible for overseeing Markel’s operations for the business’s hubs in Hong Kong and Shanghai, supporting local and regional teams in executing strategy, enhancing product offerings, and strengthening broker and client relationships in the Greater China region.

Commenting on the appointment, Chang said Jiang will bring greater alignment and collaboration across the region. “Her leadership will ensure a unified and strategic approach as we continue to scale in one of Asia Pacific’s most important markets.”

The appointment follows a series of recent senior hires in Asia Pacific by the Lloyd’s player as it looks to grow its presence in the region. Yesterday, the business confirmed that former APAC MD Stobbs will relocate to the US to take on the new role of Chief Strategy and Corporate Development Officer.

In addition to announcing Chang’s appointment as Regional Managing Director in June, Markel also named Jasminder Kaur as the new Country Head for Malaysia this month, tasked with leading the company’s strategic growth in the country.
