Aia elevates fisher zhang to regional chief executive

AIA Group on Friday announced the appointment of Fisher Zhang as Regional Chief Executive, pending regulatory approvals.

In his new position, Zhang will take on market responsibilities for Mainland China, South Korea, and Vietnam.

Zhang first joined AIA in 2000 and became Chief Executive Officer for China in 2017. As part of his new role, he will join the Group Executive Committee and report to Lee Yuan Siong, AIA’s Group Chief Executive and President.

“I am delighted to announce Fisher’s internal promotion to Regional Chief Executive,” said Lee. “Fisher has a proven track record of success and I am confident that he will bring the same determination, discipline and teamwork to drive results in his new role.”

During Zhang’s tenure as CEO for China, AIA became the first foreign company to establish a wholly-owned life insurance subsidiary in Mainland China.

The company has since expanded to 10 regions, including new branches in Tianjin, Hebei, Sichuan, Hubei, and Henan. Over the last month, AIA China has also received regulatory approval for new branches in Anhui and Shandong provinces, as well as Chongqing municipality.

AIA said in its announcement that under Zhang’s leadership, AIA China has implemented a strategy which has seen the business top customer engagement scores among major market players for seven years.

The insurer added that Zhang has developed a professional agency force, which has contributed to the company achieving the highest number of Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) members.

Speaking on his new appointment, Zhang said, “I’m truly honoured and excited to take on this new role and grateful for the confidence placed in me by AIA.”

Zhang will maintain his current role as CEO of China until his new appointment receives the necessary regulatory approvals.
