Howden Group Holdings has appointed Rowan Douglas as its new CEO of Climate Risk and Resilience.

According to the company, Douglas will be responsible for developing a comprehensive range of services and providing global support to the company’s group, integrating climate change and resilience into its areas and specialties.

“This appointment is an important step in accelerating the growth of Howden’s climate and resilience capabilities, and preludes further significant investment to create a platform for the future that meets the opportunity and scale of market demand over the coming decades,” said Howden.

The company noted that it is aiming to support vulnerable populations and industries, as well as facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy. It recently announced the launch of the world’s first carbon credit invalidation product for the voluntary carbon market and its partnership with Resilient Cities Network.

“I am thrilled to be joining Howden at this remarkable time in its growth and with climate central to its future development, assets and livelihoods,” said Douglas, who is a seasoned professional with over three decades of experience in the (re)insurance sector.

“My decision was driven by the company’s recognition, from the very top, that insurance capabilities are essential to de-risk the climate transition and protect lives,” he added.

Douglas led the Climate and Resilience Hub (CRH) and expanded the team to include over 130 professionals specializing in climate risk. He was also been a member of the UK Prime Minister’s Council for Science & Technology from 2011 to 2016.

Howden also announced the appointment of Charlie Langdale as the new Chair of Climate Risk and Resilience. Douglas will report to David Howden, the CEO of the company.
