Mapfre Re has appointed Chaturbhuj Bansal as Head of its India branch, the company announced on LinkedIn, strengthening its presence in one of the fastest-growing (re)insurance markets globally.
The appointment forms part of the reinsurer’s broader Asia-Pacific strategy, as it seeks to deepen its local footprint and enhance engagement with clients and brokers in India. In February, the global reinsurer secured a regulatory nod to open a branch office in India’s International Financial Services Centre in GIFT City.
Bansal joins Mapfre Re from Swiss Re, where he spent more than 13 years in a range of senior underwriting, risk and governance roles across India and Singapore. Most recently, he served as Director and Head of Property & Casualty Treaty Underwriting Advisory.
With more than 16 years of experience in the insurance and reinsurance sector, his appointment is expected to support Mapfre Re’s efforts to expand underwriting capabilities and strengthen market relationships in India and the wider region.
“This appointment represents a key milestone in Mapfre Re’s Asia-Pacific strategy and supports the company’s ambition to build a strong local presence, enhancing proximity to clients and brokers in the region,” Mapfre said.
Bansal will be based in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), a key hub for reinsurance activity.
GIFT City has emerged as a hub for international reinsurers looking to access the Indian market. The list of global (re)insurers at GIFT City has expanded rapidly this year, with names such as Kuwait Re, MAPFRE Re, Echo Re, PartnerRe and Abu Dhabi National Insurance, following approvals for Peak Re, Berkley Insurance, Korean Re, Everest Re and Sing Re in 2025.
