Sompo has named Beatrice Morley as Head of London, Reinsurance, to lead the group’s reinsurance underwriting team in London and coordinate strategy and local execution with regional leadership as it pursues growth in international markets.
Her appointment follows Sompo Holdings’ completion of its US$3.5bn acquisition of specialty (re)insurer Aspen Insurance Holdings in February, a deal which forms part of the Japanese group’s strategy to expand its P&C and specialty business outside of its home country.
Morley spent significant time in Asia Pacific with Aspen, including as the regional head of casualty treaty and as head of APAC from June 2021. She then moved to London in August 2023 to take up the role of global head of casualty and head of international reinsurance.
Prior, Morley has also held roles at Catlin, Swiss Re and Aon, with experience across Singapore and the Philippines.
Sompo, one of Japan’s largest non-life insurers, reported record earnings in fiscal 2024, with combined net income up 46% year-on-year to JPY2.2 trillion. The Aspen acquisition comes amid a wider strategic shift, after the group announced in February last year plans to consolidate its business into two global segments: Sompo P&C and Sompo Wellbeing.
