Sun Life and global foundation Beyond Sport have expanded their joint community programme, Hoops + Health, with the initiative now reaching more than 48,000 young people across Asia, according to a press release issued 16 September.

Launched in September 2023, the programme uses basketball to encourage more active lifestyles and address rising levels of youth inactivity in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore. In its second year, participation increased by 250% compared to 2024, with nearly nine in ten participants saying they had gained more opportunities to be physically active.

The scheme has also focused on capacity building. The number of upskilled coaches rose by 103% over the past year, while 94% of coaches who took part in Hoops + Health workshops said the training would have a positive impact on the young people they work with. In addition, 17,700 participants gained access to improved basketball equipment.

In Singapore, participant Shanelle Lim said the programme “helped me improve my skills on the court, and also taught me about health, teamwork, and self-confidence.” She has since taken up an internship as a coach.

Commenting on the progress, David Broom, Chief Client and Distribution Officer at Sun Life Asia, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to “helping people live healthier lives by investing in communities, removing barriers and empowering the next generation to get active.”

Beyond Sport’s Executive Director, Fred Fikouhi-Turner, highlighted that the second year brought “expanded youth programming, inclusive festivals and educational training adapted to each region,” which in turn allowed the initiative to extend its reach across more communities in Asia.
