Markel has relocated Rob Jones from London to Singapore as sustainable energy and power underwriter, giving the specialty insurer a dedicated energy underwriter in Asia Pacific as it grows its energy business in the region.
Before moving to underwriting, Jones had been with Markel International for over six years, most recently as part of the business’s London claims team, serving as senior claims adjuster for energy, liability, and terrorism. Before Markel, he held claims-related roles for Alesco Risk Management and RKH Specialty.
In Singapore, he will report to Aminah Sulaiman, senior underwriter for energy, and support the growth of Markel’s renewables and power portfolio across Asia Pacific, as well as client and broker relationships.
Commenting on the appointment, Sucheng Chang, Asia Pacific managing director at Markel, said that the region continues to account for a significant share of global renewable capacity additions and energy-transition investment.
“Rob’s appointment is a direct response to that opportunity. It strengthens our ability to serve energy clients navigating this transition,” he added.
Earlier this month, Markel outlined its broader Asia-Pacific growth plans, with Chang affirming the specialty insurer’s aim to nearly double its regional book over the next five years.
The insurer has also been building out its regional leadership and underwriting teams, including the appointment of Abbas Choker as Asia-Pacific chief financial officer and Kevin Leung to lead Southeast Asia under a new regional structure.
Markel has also promoted James Vlasveld and James Crawford to senior underwriting roles in Australia and hired Audrey Pang as its first Hong Kong claims specialist.
