Canopius promotes APAC Chief Mark Newman to UK CEO role

Newman will assume his new position in Jan 2024, following a successful tenure in APAC in which he oversaw a fivefold increase in revenue for the region.

Global specialty (re)insurer Canopius Group has announced the appointment of Mark Newman as its Chief Executive Officer for the UK.

Newman, who currently serves as the CEO of the Asia Pacific region, will assume his new responsibilities on January 1st 2024, subject to regulatory approval. He will join the Canopius Managing Agents (CMA) Board of Directors as part of the transition.

Interim UK CEO, Kate Roy, will return to her primary position as Group Chief Operating Officer once Newman takes over at the turn of the year.

Newman has thirty years of experience and leadership positions across the industry, including CEO at Guy Carpenter Fac Asia Pacific in 2000, CEO at Catlin APAC in 2008, and Head of Asia and Deputy CEO, Asia at XL Catlin in 2015.

He joined Canopius in 2016. Canopius said that, during his tenure as CEO of APAC, Newman has overseen the business grow its regional revenue five-fold, surpassing the strategic plan’s key performance indicators, on the way to establishing Canopius as the leading Lloyd’s Managing Agent in Asia Pacific.

He has proven himself to be the right candidate to take on the role of UK CEO, and I’m confident that he will build on his strong track record and assist our UK teams execute their growth plans.”

Neil Robertson, CEO of Canopius Group, expressed confidence in Newman’s capacity to lead the UK business: “We are thrilled that Mark will be taking over the leadership of our UK business. He has led the successful evolution of our APAC operations, exceeding the five-year growth plan for our Singapore and Australia businesses.

In preparation for Newman’s move, Canopius is actively searching for his successor in the Asia Pacific and is considering both internal and external candidates. Until a suitable successor is appointed, Newman has committed to continue his involvement with the region for a seamless transition of leadership.
