John Chen has been appointed chief executive officer of Allianz Jingdong General Insurance, succeeding William Liang with effect from 16 October 2026, the insurer said in a press release.
Chen brings 20 years of experience across Chinese and international insurance markets. He most recently served as president of Swiss Re China and was a member of its Asia Management Team.
Before joining Swiss Re, Chen spent 12 years at PICC Property and Casualty Insurance as chief actuary and an executive committee member, overseeing product development and pricing strategy.
“John brings a strong combination of actuarial expertise, strategic leadership, and deep industry knowledge as he takes on this role at Allianz JD,” the insurer said.
Liang, who had led the company since September 2021, left Allianz on 15 October after 11 years with the group to pursue new opportunities.
During his tenure as CEO, Liang oversaw growth in business scale while strengthening profitability and operational performance, Allianz JD said.
Allianz Jingdong is a joint venture between German insurer Allianz and Chinese e-commerce group JD.com. It focuses on non-motor insurance, including freight cover for returned goods and liability insurance. The company held a 0.4% share of China’s non-life insurance market in 2025.
The appointment follows other leadership changes across Allianz’s Asia-Pacific operations. At Allianz Trade, Scott Munafò stepped in as CEO of China on 1 September 2026 amid a wider management reshuffle across the region.
In August, Allianz also appointed Lars Heibutzki and Sanghun Park to leadership roles ahead of the retirement of Thailand country manager and CEO Tom Wilson at the end of 2026.
