Markel Insurance has appointed Weng Fatt Tan as senior underwriter for casualty in Malaysia, with immediate effect, as the insurer builds out a dedicated casualty underwriting capability in the country.
Based in Kuala Lumpur, Tan brings 16 years of insurance and reinsurance experience, specialising in casualty and liability underwriting.
He joins from Berjaya Sompo Insurance Berhad, where he most recently served as head of liability, commercial underwriting. He has also held casualty underwriting roles at Chubb Insurance and Liberty Specialty.
In his new role, Tan will lead Markel’s casualty business in Malaysia and oversee the marine energy liability portfolio. He will work closely with Alicia Leong, head of marine and energy liabilities, Singapore, alongside regional and London-based underwriting teams.
Commenting on the announcement, Jasminder Kaur, country head of Markel Malaysia, said Malaysia is an increasingly important market in Asia Pacific. “Weng Fatt brings valuable technical expertise, market insight and strong broker relationships and we are excited about the role he will play in shaping this next phase of growth.”
The appointment follows a run of hires as Markel continues to strengthen its presence in Asia Pacific. The insurer named Henry Ang as head of terrorism in Singapore, tasking the former Everest underwriter with growing its political violence and terrorism portfolio across the region. Last month, the firm also launched a fine art and specie unit in Australia, hiring Matthew Stock from 360 Underwriting Solutions to lead the business.
