• Momentick’s platform delivers satellite-based methane data; JGC Global provides drone measurements for Sompo’s greenhouse gas consulting.
• The solution is available to Sompo Japan’s domestic and international clients.
• The move supports LNG sector efforts to cut methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
Sompo Japan Insurance has partnered with emissions intelligence firm Momentick and engineering and construction company JGC Global to launch an advanced methane detection solution that is directly integrated into insurance coverage.
Momentick’s platform utilises satellite imagery to accurately detect and measure methane emissions around insured assets, helping global (re)insurer Sompo assess risks and produce detailed reports. JGC Global will provide drone-based measurements that Sompo can use for its high-precision greenhouse gas measurement and consulting services.
The solution is now available to Sompo Japan’s local and international clients.
“These insights allow Sompo Japan and its clients to identify high-risk areas and take informed action to mitigate emissions and manage environmental risks effectively,” the announcement stated.
The move follows ongoing efforts to decarbonise liquefied natural gas (LNG), with a target of lowering methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
Commenting on the move, Toshiyuki Karasawa, JGC’s Executive Officer and Senior General Manager of the Process Technology Division, said: “By leveraging our on-site MRV (Measurement, Reporting, Verification) expertise and project management capabilities with Sompo and Momentick, we’re delivering the robust data that companies and insurers can rely on to make smarter, faster decisions.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Kashmir, Momentick CEO and co-founder, highlighted that Sompo’s approach demonstrates the importance of integrating emissions intelligence to “strengthen the role of insurers in reducing risk and supporting environmental accountability in high-impact sectors.”
