Sompo has appointed Henry MacHale as chief underwriting officer and head of strategy for its international markets insurance business, which spans 22 countries across four regions, including APAC.
Based in London, MacHale will report to Alessa Quane, chief executive officer of international markets.
He joins after more than 15 years at Aspen, where he most recently served as group chief strategy officer. He previously held several underwriting leadership roles at the company, including co-chief underwriting officer of Aspen Insurance UK, and global head of specialty, among others.
In the new role, MacHale will work with regional underwriting teams to strengthen underwriting performance, set global underwriting policy, and support pricing and underwriting risk control frameworks.
Quane said the appointment would support Sompo’s efforts to strengthen underwriting performance, governance and risk controls, while sharpening its regional strategy.
The hire follows a string of Sompo appointments in the region, including for Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, where the business appointed Kelvin Woo as chief distribution officer and hired Gally Wong as senior construction underwriter. The insurer also appointed Sarah Lee as multinational network manager for APAC, announcing the move last week.
