Sompo Asia Pacific has appointed Canon Liu as head of financial lines for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, the company announced on Tuesday.

Based in Hong Kong, Liu joins from QBE Asia, where he worked for over 4 years, most recently serving as market lead for financial lines. He brings over 20 years of financial services and insurance experience, including over 17 years in financial lines underwriting.

Before joining QBE, he spent more than 13 years at AIG, where he held underwriting roles across the firm’s Hong Kong and Taiwan operations.

In his new role, Liu will oversee Sompo’s financial lines underwriting strategy across the three markets, with responsibility for the directors’ and officers’, professional indemnity, financial institutions and cyber portfolios.

“Canon brings a well-established track record in Financial Lines underwriting, portfolio management, and market development,” Sompo said. “His expertise in corporate risk underwriting and commitment to product innovation will further enhance our product capabilities and reinforce underwriting excellence across the region.”

The appointment follows a series of leadership additions to Sompo’s regional APAC operations this year, including Daniel Lukas as head of personal lines, Maureen Ung as director, commercial distribution, and Sarah Lee as multinational network manager.
