Markel Insurance has appointed Abbas Choker as chief financial officer for Asia Pacific with immediate effect, the company said in a press release on Wednesday.

Based in Singapore, Choker joins Markel after more than two years at AIG, where he most recently served as regional head of financial planning and analysis for APAC. He brings over two decades of insurance industry experience. Before AIG, Choker served as CFO of Chubb Malaysia. He also held finance leadership roles at BHSI and IAG.

Choker will report to Sucheng Chang, who joined Markel as managing director for Asia Pacific last year. He will also work closely with Andy Davies, chief financial officer for Markel International.

“Asia Pacific represents one of the most compelling growth opportunities in specialty insurance globally,” Chang said. “As we build on strong momentum to date, it is essential that we continue investing in the talent, capabilities and infrastructure needed to support sustainable long-term growth and performance in the region.”

The appointment follows a series of hires and business launches as Markel expands its presence in APAC. The specialty insurer recently appointed Henry Ang as head of terrorism in Singapore and launched a fine art and specie unit in Australia, led by Matthew Stock.
