Swiss Re has appointed Dean Galligan as Head of Transactions for its Life and Health Reinsurance (L&H Re) business unit, creating a new role aimed at strengthening the reinsurer’s capabilities in complex capital, balance‑sheet and longevity solutions.

Galligan will assume the role on 1 August 2026 and will be based in London. The newly established position will bring together L&H Re’s global teams involved in structuring complex reinsurance transactions, including capital optimisation and longevity reinsurance, Swiss Re said.

He joins Swiss Re from Phoenix Group, where he served as Chief Capital Officer and was a member of the FTSE 100 group’s executive committee. Prior to that, he was global head of cross‑asset structuring and solutions at Barclays Investment Bank, where he worked on complex transactions for institutional clients, including insurers.

Paul Murray, Chief Executive of L&H Reinsurance at Swiss Re, said demand for structured reinsurance transactions is growing as life insurers seek to manage risks linked to demographic shifts, capital efficiency and financial market volatility.

“Dean’s global perspective, experience and strong track record of bringing together the asset and liability sides of the balance sheet allow L&H Re to strengthen our capabilities and meet this increasing demand from our clients across the globe.”

Earlier in his career, Galligan spent more than 15 years at Goldman Sachs, holding senior leadership roles and advising reinsurance and insurance clients on capital optimisation, risk transfer and structured financing.
