Willis has promoted Scott Kirkwood to head of natural resources for the Pacific region, the global broker announced on Friday.

Before taking on the new role, Kirkwood, who is based in Brisbane, led Willis’ operations in Queensland as general manager. In that role, he advised complex, asset-intensive organisations in high-risk environments, with a focus on natural resources such as mining, Willis said.

He will now lead the build-out and expansion of Willis’ natural resources business across the Pacific region, leveraging the team’s mining capabilities and specialist knowledge to drive growth and broaden Willis’ offering.

“This role is an important step in strengthening our natural resources capability for clients across Australia and New Zealand,” said James Baum, head of Pacific at Willis. “With deep sector expertise and a strong track record of leadership, Scott will help us build on our market-leading mining proposition while further expanding into adjacent natural resources segments, including power and renewable energy.”

Kirkwood’s appointment is the latest in a series of senior appointments across Asia-Pacific by Willis. In January, the business created distinct natural resources and construction leadership roles for the Asian region while appointing Steve Hutchinson as head of CRB for Hong Kong and Macau. More recently, among other appointments, the business has named Albert Andrew as FINEX leader for Southeast Asia, Alex Benson as head of construction and natural resources claims for Asia, Michelle Ng as head of risk and analytics for Pacific, and Mareli Vermeulen as head of M&A, Asia.
