Zurich Insurance Group has appointed Scott Yin as chief executive officer of Zurich China, subject to regulatory approval, the insurer said on Wednesday.

Yin will be based in Shanghai and report to Eric Hui, CEO of Greater China. In the role, he will “lead the next phase of growth for Zurich’s commercial insurance business, while expanding its retail business”, the insurer said. He will also work closely with Zurich Cover-More on its Travel Guard offerings in the Chinese market.

Yin joins from AXA Tianping, where he served as chief actuary and chief pricing officer. There he set up the EV Insurance Centre of Excellence and worked with Chinese insurers and automotive partners to support Chinese EV manufacturers as they expanded overseas.

Yin has more than 20 years of experience across the Chinese and Australian insurance markets, with a focus on motor and EV pricing and underwriting. Before AXA Tianping, he worked in actuarial roles at Suncorp Group in Sydney and moved into consulting with Quantium and then EY, where he built the firm’s P&C actuarial advisory practice in Shanghai. He is a Fellow of both the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK.

“Scott brings deep technical expertise, commercial leadership and extensive knowledge of the Chinese insurance market,” Hui said.

The appointment comes a day after Zurich expanded Martin Noble’s role to Greater China chief financial officer. Noble remains CFO for Hong Kong. In September, the insurer named Dylan Bryant head of Zurich Multinational & Captives, Asia Pacific, and Patrick Fyson head of property, Asia.
