Niva Bupa Health Insurance has promoted executive director and chief business officer Ankur Kharbanda to deputy chief executive officer, effective immediately.

According to a BSE filing, the firm’s board approved the move at its 8 May meeting, with Kharbanda continuing as an executive director alongside the new deputy CEO remit.

Kharbanda joined Niva Bupa in April 2020, most recently serving as its executive director and chief business officer and was responsible for sales and distribution. He has over two decades of experience in the health insurance market. Before moving to Niva Bupa, he held retail and distribution positions across India’s health insurance sector, including stints at Apollo Munich and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance.

The board’s decision to promote Kharbanda comes amid other senior leadership changes have been unfolding in the group in Asia this year, with Bupa Global appointing Alison Massey as general manager for Asia and Yuman Chan resigning as general manager of Bupa Hong Kong.

Kharbanda’s appointment also comes with Niva Bupa reporting 27% year-on-year gross written premium growth in FY2026, driven by retail health, but also alongside a higher combined ratio of 103.4% amid an increase in claims.
