Starr has appointed Sparks Lai as head of business development, marine, for North Asia, the insurer announced on Thursday.

Hong Kong-based Lai joins from Generali Global Corporate & Commercial, where he spent four years and worked as a business development manager, marine. His previous experience includes time at Tokio Marine & Nichido and Allied World, both in marine roles.

“Sparks brings 13 years of insurance industry experience, specialising in Marine business,” Starr said in a statement on LinkedIn. “His expertise, combined with his strong understanding of the North Asia market, will help strengthen Starr’s Marine portfolio in Hong Kong and across the region while delivering continued value for our clients and partners.”

Lai’s appointment follows several senior hires by Starr across Asia Pacific this year, including Jean Michoud as regional travel partnerships lead for Asia Pacific, Vichai Laotrakul as CEO of Thailand, Vivian Xiao as head of financial lines for China, and Jane Tung as head of casualty in Hong Kong.
